Often as kids, well-meaning adults gave us this sage counsel when we came home from school in tears having been called a hurtful name: “Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can never hurt you.” And for anyone who barely survived recess, not to mention years of therapy, that counsel is not only not helpful, it’s not even true. Our words and actions can hurt us and others. But even more damaging are our reactions to that hurt.
